I love capturing weddings with other established professional photographers. I'm especially fond of other photographers who shoot different genres and not just weddings. I photographed a wedding recently with a fashion photographers. Though I've been doing photography for a decent number of years now, I learned a ton.
This photographer also introduced me to a very cool trend that I thought I'd share. And TBH, at first I didn't really even like photos like this. The lighting is usually very harsh and it overall just looks like a bad photo. If you couldn't guess by now what I'm referring to, it's the paparazzi high fashion look.
The photos literally look like they're taken with your dad's budget dslr, kit lens and a cheap flash on top. I've seen some photographers actually use disposable film cameras to achieve the look.
I believe the reason the style is so popular now is because of the sense of nostalgia. I used old film cameras with the flash when I was in high school. I still have these photos in a box somewhere in storage. Every so often I come across them and I go down memory lane. These paparazzi photos carry a whiff of that old film, flash look to it.
Another reason I think this style and trend has caught on is simply because it has been made popular in fashion magazines and we see that style of shooting in the tabloids and other print media. Hence, what some might call bad photography has caught on as an art form.
This fashion photographer I spoke of earlier, took our couple out of the party and around the hotel, where the reception was being held. We did some shots in an elevator, outside by the valet, and a little in the streets. All the typical places you'd find a paparazzi :) The point was to be as cheezy and cheap looking as possible. The light didn't have to be perfect. It's supposed to feel hectic and unplanned. This is a style I'm now shooting almost every wedding.
I found a couple of girlfriends who had a bit to drink and decided to do this paparazzi style with them.
On a separate occasion, found a few more guests who were willing to be good sports and let me shoot "bad" artsy images of them.
Overall, these images are not meant to win the best looking most beautiful. The whole point is to get a gritty, vintage vibe. So on your wedding or event, you can request this of your photographer.
